Nanisivik

Nanisivik is an abandoned place in the territory of Nunavut, Canada. It is located on the Borden Peninsula in the north of Baffin Island, located about 25 km inland. After the exhaustion located here lead and zinc mines Nanisivik was abandoned in 2004. Only the airport " Nanisivik " is still operated and connects with Arctic Bay Iqaluit in line Flight ( First Air Ltd. ). The Inuktitut word Nanisivik ( ᓇᓂᓯᕕᒃ ) means " place where to find things."

Founded in 1974 as a mining settlement had Nanisivik around the turn of the century about 290 inhabitants (of which only 16% Inuit ). The distance to the capital Iqaluit was around 1225 km. A 21- kilometer road connecting the place with Arctic Bay on Admiralty Inlet.

Nanisivik Naval Facility

On 8 August 2007 plans were announced to build on the site of a military naval base. The plan was to convert the existing port of call in a deep-sea port. These measures cost $ 60 million. On 10 August 2007, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper was on the construction of new landing and refueling facilities for the Canadian Forces known. The aim is to strengthen the long-term Canadian military presence in the northern regions of Canada and operate a permanent manned base. The choice for Nanisivik fell on the Northwest Passage due to its location. The U.S. Thule Air Force Base is located 600 km north-east.

The detailed planning began in 2007 with environmental analyzes and lasted until 2008. During the summer, construction began on the base to accommodate 2012 commence operations. The base is expected to reach its final expansion and full operational strength of 2015/2016.
