Nanterre

Nanterre is a neighborhood on the banks of the Seine western suburb of the French capital, Paris. The municipality with 89 476 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) is the seat of the department of Hauts -de -Seine and since 1966 the seat of the Diocese of Nanterre.

Nanterre shares the famous skyscraper district of La Défense with neighboring communities Courbevoie and Puteaux.

History

Nanterre is home to the Université de Paris X, at the philosophical faculty with the movement of 22 March, the 68-movement of France took their starting point.

The community tends politically to the left and is since 1935 - interrupted only under the German occupation 1940-1944 - ruled by communist mayors, currently this is Patrick Jarry. The establishment of the new headquarters of the right-wing National Front in 2007 was therefore accompanied by massive protests.
