Nao (robot)

Nao is a humanoid robot of the French robot manufacturer Aldebaran Robotics. The Nao was introduced in 2006 for the first time since August 2007 and is the official successor of the Sony Aibo as the standard platform RoboCup. For the first time the NAO were V1 used in competition at the RoboCup 2008, the use of the Naos 2010 has been confirmed for the period until 2013. In May 2011 it was announced that parts of the software to be released under an open source license by the end of the year. Intel supported the further development with an investment made in June 2011. Then the Nao Next Gen was introduced in December 2011, which became the basis of the range of Aldebaran.

There are different versions of the robot with different degrees of freedom and various sensors installed. The Robocup robot is 57.3 cm tall and weighs 5.2 kg. At the top is a 1.6 GHz Intel Atom Z530 processor are ( a secondary CPU is in the torso ) and two HD cameras at 30 frames / second integrated. The battery life is said to be about 90 minutes according to the manufacturer.

The Nao spent several years in development, however, it was possible to buy individual copies on request from the manufacturer. The price is about 10,000 EUR. In October 2012, the URBI controller system and the programming language Urbiscript was released under the BSD license. This execution platform came through a takeover of Gostai in July 2012 in the possession of Aldebaran, URBI itself also runs on other manufacturers' products (such as Lego Mindstorms NXT ).
