Narayana Pandit

Narayana was an Indian mathematician of the 14th century. He is considered one of the most important medieval mathematicians in India outside the Kerala school.

About him little is known. He was the son of Nrsimha ( Narasimha or ).

He is best known as the author of a book on arithmetic and geometry Ganita Kaumudi of 1356. The report contains, for example, methods of squaring of numbers ( with the Indians often independent of multiplication methods treated ), he gave formulas for triangles with integer sides and additional conditions, sequences of numbers such as arithmetic progressions treated ( in a chapter grid of numbers ), methods of approximate calculation of square roots (via the Pellsche equation), a formula for a circle segment and the last chapter deals with Magic Squares.

Often the Karmapradipika ascribed to it, a commentary on the Lilavati of Bhaskara II. Others suspect Madhava as the author. There is also a Bijaganitavatamsa of Narayana, a book on algebra, which is received in an incomplete manuscript.
