Narbasi

The Narbasi ( ancient Greek: Ναρβασοί ) were a tribe in Iberia. They settled according to Ptolemy (~ 100-175 AD) between the rivers Miño ( ancient name: Minius ) and Douro ( ancient name: Durius ) in present-day Portugal ( Viana do Castelo District and District of Braga ) and Spain ( Galicia). They wrote to the tribal confederation of the Lusitanians as a clientele master the Gallaekern and with them. The Narbasi had after Ptolemaois a forum (Town ) Narbasorum whose position can not be uniquely determined.

Etymology

Considered etymologically there is no connection of the name to Celtic. It is believed the name is related to the ancient region of Narbonensis and the city Narbo. The area on which the Narbasi settled partly covers the territory of Seurbi that Pliny mentioned a century earlier, from. The name gives read counter-clockwise or Sabran, a metathesis considered Sarban.
