Narcisse Girard

Narcisse Girard (* 1798, † January 17, 1860 in Paris) was a French conductor.

Girard studied at the Conservatoire de Paris with Pierre Baillot violin and composition with Anton Reicha. After his graduation in 1820 he spent several years in Italy. He then led in Paris various orchestras: first the orchestra of the Théâtre-Italien, in 1836 the orchestra of the Opéra -Comique and from 1849 to 1859 as the successor of François- Antoine Habeneck the Société des concerts du Conservatoire. He was also chief conductor of the Imperial Orchestra and the orchestra of the Académie Imperiale de Musique and taught at the Conservatoire de Paris.

Girard conducted on November 23, 1834 premiere of the symphony Harold in Italy, his friend Hector Berlioz, who had already dedicated to him the overture of his opera Les Francs Juges. He was awarded the Knight of the Legion of Honour.
