Nardi FN.305

The Nardi FN.305 was a trainer aircraft of the Italian manufacturer Fratelli Nardi from the 1930s.

History

The origins of the constructed by the brothers Luigi and Euste Nardi Nardi FN.305 date back to 1933. The new aircraft was shown two years later at the first international air show in Milan. While the prototype Fiat A.70 7- cylinder radial engine was fitted using the standard version ( built since 1937) the new 6- cylinder in-line engine Alfa Romeo 115 Since Fratelli Nardi, the aircraft could not establish itself as a workshop, they were at Piaggio Aero Industries built.

Construction

The FN.305 was a cantilever low- wing monoplane of mixed construction; the prototype was a tandem two-seater with a closed cockpit. The tail was performed in a conventional form using the elevator under the vertical stabilizer. The FN.305 was one of the first Italian aircraft with retractable landing gear; it was fed into the bearing surface. A tail skid was mounted under the tail.

The Alfa Romeo 115 was a 6- cylinder, air-cooled, continuous in-line engine of Alfa Romeo, which was a licensed production of the de Havilland Gipsy Six.

Use

The Italian Regia Aeronautica purchased 258 Nardi FN.305: almost all were two-seat FN.305A that have been used as a school or liaison aircraft.

In addition, in 1938, nine aircraft were sold to Chile and 31 in Romania. In Romania, 124 copies in the Întreprinderea Aeronáutica Română ( IAR ) were later built under license. The largest order (300 aircraft) was intended for France, but until the declaration of war on 10 June 1940, only 41 pieces were delivered. The last foreign customer was Hungary, which ordered 50 copies.

After September 8th, 1943, the Air Force confiscated 26 Nardi FN.305 for compound tasks.
