Naringenin is a flavonoid, which is found mainly in citrus plants, especially in grapefruit. It is the aglycone of glycoside, naringin, a bittering agent, which is responsible for the bitter taste of grapefruit. After the split in the stomach arises from the naringenin.

Effect

This substance can influence the effect of drugs, since it has an inhibitory effect on the degradative enzymes. Thereby the effect of the drugs is enhanced. This concerns, inter alia, Cardiac, cancer and asthma agent, potency and antidepressants. Already a glass (200 ml) Grapefruit juice can trigger this reaction. The effectiveness of the birth control pill is not reduced by naringenin, however, as the degrading enzyme is inhibited. As a result, higher levels of the active ingredient estradiol are reached (active ingredient of the contraceptive pill ) in the blood. There may be an increase in side effects such as breast tenderness.

Naringenin inhibits inter alia an isoform of cytochrome P450 CYP1A2.
