Naringin is a glycoside contained in grapefruits and pomelos and gives them the bitter taste. In the body, naringin is metabolized by bacterial enzymes to the aglycone naringenin and naringin glucuronides.
Naringin and naringenin aglycone be belong to the group of natural polyphenols. Most of them have antioxidant and lipid- lowering effect.
Naringin has no direct impact on the effectiveness of drugs that can above degradation products - together with other ingredients of grapefruit, as bergamottin - increase the effects and side effects of some medication because it inhibits various subtypes of the cytochrome P450 ( CYP3A4, CYP1A2 and CYP2A6 ). Thus, the degradation of the active compounds in the body by cytochrome P450 is slowed, other medicines may also be reduced in their effect. This also led already to death, is why to look for when taking certain medications on no grapefruit, grapefruit juice, etc. to consume.
