Narritjin Maymuru

Narritjin Maymuru (* 1916, † 1981) belonged to the Aboriginal tribe of Djarrakpi in northeastern Arnhem Land of Australia's Northern Territory.

Narritjin was a bark painter, draftsman, and sculptor who lived in the 1950s in Darwin. There he worked for bead makers and painted for the anthropologist Ronald Berndt human countenance. He also worked for missionaries who finance with the earned money from the sale of pictures their missions and white Australians wanted to learn about the culture of the Yolngu. As the trade increased and the demand grew, leading artists such as Maymuru were asked to put together exhibitions. He sat committed to ensuring that women painted and were able to exhibit their works. His daughter was a well-known painter.

His paintings of the Dreamtime included the creation of beings Guwarrk, Marrngu and Nyapililngu.

Important was his involvement in the petition in the form of a bark painting of Yirrkala in 1963. He also collaborated with filmmaker Ian Dunlop.
