Nasopharyngeal airway

A Wendl tube ( presented in 1958 by Johann Karl Wendl ) is a nasopharyngeal. It is inserted through the nose, its tip comes to lie in the throat. The Wendl tube serves the maintenance of a patent airway by preventing the transfer of the pharynx by the tongue falling back ground when bewusstseinsgetrübten patients. It does not prevent aspiration.

Usually it comes in the postoperative period in patients scheduled for application that do not tolerate Guedel airway. In contrast to the Guedel Wendl less gag reflex triggers at the correct position and is thus relatively well tolerated.

The size of Wendl tubes is given in units Charriere; available are Wendl tubes in sizes CH 16 to CH 36

The Guedel airway has a similar function, but introduced through the mouth.
