Nasothek

A Nasothek (from Latin: nasus "nose" and ancient Greek θήκη " container ", Analog Education for Library ) is a repository for noses of portrait busts and statues.

Ancient statues and busts are often delivered in damaged condition. Particularly common are missing noses, but other protruding body parts. This allowed to reconstruct until the 19th century. In the 20th century, a turning point came: Since you hold in archeology the authenticity of the findings for more important than their integrity and their original appearance, about the could only speculate anyway. Therefore, the reconstructed noses were removed from the exhibited antique statues and busts again. The sometimes very elaborate noses were not thrown away, but collected in specially equipped Nasotheken. The Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen exhibits her Nasothek to lead the audience the transformation of exhibition practice in mind.
