Nat Finkelstein

Nat L. Finkelstein ( born January 17, 1933, Brooklyn, New York City; † October 2, 2009 in Shandaken, New York ) was an American photographer, photojournalist and author. Finkelstein was known mainly in the 1960s through his photographs of Andy Warhol's Factory.

Life

Finkelstein learned the photography with Alexei Brodowitsch, the art director of Harper 's Bazaar. He first worked as a photojournalist for the Black Star and PIX photo agencies, for which he reported mainly on the political development of the various New York subcultures. His first exhibitions he made in 1963 in the Fifth Street Gallery and in 1964 in the well-known meeting place for artists Cedars Bar From 1964, Finkelstein joined the Warhol Factory, where he remained three years. His photographs of Warhol entourage in the legendary " Silver Factory " are among the most famous of their time and were given whether their photo documentary value of a cult symbol character.

1968 designed Finkelstein together with Warhol, the artist's book, The Andy Warhol Index. Finkelstein's work can be found worldwide in the collections of museums and galleries, including, inter alia in the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Tate Modern and the Saatchi Gallery in London, the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris and in Germany at the Ludwig Museum in Cologne, as well as in several private collections. Finkelstein's artist books are coveted collectors objects.

Finkelstein's photo essays are today printed in various publications such as Time, Life, Sports Illustrated, Vogue, The New York Times Magazine, Rolling Stone or in the London Times. Published in 2006, Finkelstein with David Dalton 's biography Edie Factory Girl about Warhol muse Edie Sedgwick.
