Natchez people

Natchez or Nauchee (also Nah' - Chee, abgel of the Eigenbez. W'Nahk' - Chee - ' fast Krieger'oder from the Choctaw Nahni - Sakti Chata -' Warriors of the cliff ') were an American Indian people of the language group of the Hokan Natchez, which belonged to the Muskogee language family. They lived in what is now the state of Mississippi and partly in the neighboring states.

Culture

It is believed that their culture was a last foothills of the Mississippian culture. The Natchez built pyramids and called their ruler, the great sun.

History

Epidemics and lost four wars (First, Second and Third Natchez War and the Natchez uprising ) against the French destroyed the once flourishing tribe with its remarkable culture.

Some survivors were scattered among the neighboring tribes, such as Muskogee, Chickasaw and Choctaw and mingled with them.

Today, only about 5,000 exist Natchez, especially in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama and partly in Georgia. Their heyday had the Natchez in the 18th century, when there were about 22,000 of them.
