Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana
The Natchitoches Parish (French: Paroisse of Natchitoches ) is an administrative unit ( Parish ) in the state of Louisiana in the United States. In the census in 2010, the Parish had 39 566 inhabitants and a population density of 12.2 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( Parish Seat) is Natchitoches.
Geography
The Parish is located in Northwest Louisiana, is located about 50 km to the west of Texas, located in the north about 80 miles from Arkansas and has an area of 3365 square kilometers, of which 114 square kilometers are water surface.
The largest river is the Red River, which flows through the Parish in northwest -southeast direction. An oxbow of the Red River is the Cane River, which runs through the city of Natchitoches.

History
The Natchitoches Parish was formed in 1807 as one of the 19 original Parishes. It was named after the Natchitoches, one belonging to the Caddo Confederacy Tribal Culture.
Demographic data
According to the census in 2000 lived in Natchitoches Parish 39 080 people in 14,263 households and 9,499 families. The population density was 12 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 57.85 percent White, 38.43 percent Black or African American, 1.08 percent Native American, 0.44 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.92 percent from other races groups; 1.27 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.45 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race, were members of the various groups mentioned.
Of the 14,263 households out of which 33.0 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 45.3 percent were married couples living together, 17.7 percent were single mothers, 33.4 percent were non-families, 27.1 percent of all households and 10.9 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.14.
In relation to the parish the population was spread out 26.0 percent of residents under the age of 18, 17.9 percent between 18 and 24 years, 24.3 percent between 25 and 44 years, 19.7 percent between 45 and 64 years and 12.1 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 30 years. For every 100 females there were 90.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.8 males.
The median income for a household was 25,722 U.S. dollars, and the median income for a family was $ 32,816. Males have a median income of $ 29,388, women $ 19,234. The per capita income was $ 13,743. 20.9 percent of families 26.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 32.7 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 19.0 percent of those 65 years.
