Nathaniel B. Smithers

Nathaniel Barratt Smithers ( born October 8, 1818 in Dover, Delaware; † January 16, 1896 ) was an American politician.

Smithers graduated in 1836 at Lafayette College in Pennsylvania. He then studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1840 and then opened a law practice in Dover. Later he held from January 20 to November 23, 1863 the post of Secretary of State of Delaware. In addition, he was elected as a Unionist in the 38th Congress to fill the vacancy in the House of Representatives, which was caused by the death of William Temple. There he served from 7 December 1863 to 3 March 1865. He applied unsuccessfully in 1864 for reelection to the 39th Congress. He then returned to his work back to his law practice in Dover. In the same year he attended the Republican National Convention as a delegate.

Smithers died 1896 in Dover, and was buried there in the Old Methodist Cemetery.
