The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (Greek Εθνικό και Καποδιστριακό Πανεπιστήμιο Αθηνών, Ethniko ke Kapodistriako panepistimio Athinon ) or just University of Athens is the oldest of the modern universities in the eastern Mediterranean and with over 50,000 students, the second largest university in Greece.

History

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens was founded on May 3, 1837 by Otto I as Ottonische University and later named after Ioannis Kapodistrias. At its inception it was the first university in the eastern Mediterranean and the Balkans, and consisted of the four faculties of theology, law, medicine and the arts (the latter also included the departments of Applied Sciences and Mathematics with a ). According to the prevailing currents, the organizers of the university, Georg Ludwig von Maurer and Joseph of Armansperg oriented to the German educational ideas of Fichte and Humboldt. The first year the university was one of 28 professors, a quarter of them were German scholars who came as Phil Hellenes during the Greek War of Independence to Greece or King Otto accompanied 1833. In November 1841, the University moved to the new main building. Theodore of Heldreich, director of the botanical garden took over from 1858 to 1883 the post of curator of the university's Natural History Museum. 1864, the Ionian Academy was closed, and the University has been enriched by many eminent professors.

1904, the university was split into two largely autonomous areas ( arts and sciences). This was later withdrawn with the establishment of new departments again. Between 1895 and 1911 the number of students was about 1,000 a year, this was the number of those students 1837-1975, who devoted themselves to the law, relatively constant at 43%. Also, no new faculty was founded in that period: it was divided only by medicine dentistry from, similar to the philosophy of mathematics.
