The National Assembly (Armenian Ազգային ժողով / Asgajin schoghow, in scientific transliteration Azgayin žołov ) is the parliament of the Republic of Armenia.

History

The Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR, which had declared on September 21, 1991, regardless of the USSR, was elected only on 20 May 1991 ( some ballots until 3 June) in already free choice. The first National Assembly was chosen only on 5 July 1995. The number of seats was 190, of which 150 were directly elected and 40 on list positions of the parties. President of the Parliament was Babken Ararkzjan. Was forced to resign after a government crisis in February 1999, at the culmination of President Levon Ter -Petrossian, Khosrov Harutyunyan Arakzjan superseded as parliament speaker.

The second National Assembly was held on 30 May 1999. The number of seats was only 131, of which 75 were directly elected and 56 on list positions of the parties. Parliament became president of the nonpartisan Karen Demirchian (formerly General Secretary of the Armenian Communist Party ). On 27 October 1999 armed bombers stormed the National Assembly and shot leaders ( Prime Minister Wasken Sargsyan, the President of Parliament, a minister and five deputy ). Later, some of the perpetrators were sentenced to life imprisonment. New EP President was poor Khachaturian.

The elections for the third National Assembly were held on 25 May 2003. Arthur Baghdassarjan was President of the Parliament. After the withdrawal of his party from the government Tigran Torossjan was elected as the new Speaker of Parliament on 1 June 2006.

Elections 2007

On 12 May 2007, the last elections were held. Here, only 41 direct mandates were awarded. The Republican Party of Armenia was under the leadership of Prime Minister Serzh Sargsyan to expand its strong position and won 64 seats out of 131 (33 % of the vote on the party list, which gives 44 list seats, also 20 directly elected seats, 33 more than in 2003 ). On the 24 seats the party Prosperous Armenia newly founded by big businessmen Gagik Zarukjan came (15 %, 18, 6, 24). Winning was the party Armenian Revolutionary Federation was founded in 1890 (13 %, 16, 0, 5). The party " rule of law " by Arthur Baghdassarjan reached fewer seats than in the previous election (7 %, 8, 1, -10 ). Also, moved the party " heritage " of the first Foreign Minister of the Republic of Armenia after independence, Raffi Howhannissjan, into parliament (6 %, 7, 0, 7).

The last parliamentary elections were the first elections in Armenia since independence, the OSCE observers described the as " largely in accordance with international standards".
