National Assembly (Namibia)

The National Assembly (English National Assembly) is the lower house of the bicameral Parliament of the Republic of Namibia. The National Council is the upper house of the country. National Assembly and National Council have their headquarters in Namibia's capital Windhoek.

According to the Namibian Constitution in March 1990, the National Assembly of Namibia has 72 deputies, who are elected by proportional representation by popular vote for a term of five years. Six of the members are appointed directly by the President and therefore have no voting rights. President of the National Assembly ( Parliament Speaker ) is Theo-Ben Gurirab.

Parliament building

The National Assembly meets in the so-called " Ink Palace " from the year 1913. Setting up a new parliament building behind the existing plans (as of January 2014). The potential costs are specified with 700 million Namibian dollars. Against this far -reaching resistance in the population formed.
