National Centre of Scientific Research "DEMOKRITOS"

NCSR Demokritos ( National Centre of Scientific Research " Democritus ", Greek Ε.Κ.Ε.Φ.Ε. ΔΗΜΟΚΡΙΤΟΣ ) is the Greek Institute for Nuclear Research. However, the institution is also conducting research in other areas, on the one hand in order of the State, on the other hand also as a service provider for private companies.

History

Was founded the Institute in 1959 as a nuclear research center with the purpose of nuclear research for peaceful purposes. It was named after Democritus. On July 27, 1961, the research reactor of the type GGR -1 went into operation, its performance in 1971 increased to five megawatts. In 1985, the status of a self -regulatory body has been confirmed by law.

The seat of the located away from the center of Agia Paraskevi, a suburb of Athens, about 10 km. The site covers an area of ​​approximately 150 hectares and a building area of ​​35,000 sqm.
