National Film Awards

The National Film Awards (often abbreviated to National Awards) are the most prestigious film awards in India. History

The National Film Awards were introduced on the recommendation of the film Enquiry Committee headed by SK Patil in 1954 and distinguished films of last year. They first had the name State Film Awards, since 1966 they are awarded under its current name.

The first award three prizes were awarded: one "President 's Gold Medal" for the best feature film and best documentary and a "President 's Silver Medal" for the best children's film.
