The National Gallery Bangkok ( Thai:. พิพิธภัณฑสถาน แห่ง ชาติ หอ ศิลป์, English "The National Gallery" ) is the National Art Gallery of Thailand.

Location

The National Gallery Bangkok is located at the northern end of Sanam Luang, opposite the National Theatre Bangkok. It lies on the Thanon Chao Fa ( Prince Street) in District ( Khet ) of Bangkok, Phra Nakhon.

History

The current building of the National Gallery was built in the reign of King Chulalongkorn ( Rama V ) as Mint, which until then had been housed in a building of the Grand Palace. The new building was opened in the presence of the king on 4 February 1902.

The coin was built in a Western architectural style of brick with a gable roof. The architect is said to have inspired by a factory building in Birmingham here. The building has two wings and a courtyard, it has unusually rich ornaments for a factory building on. It was registered on September 19, 1978 as a national monument.

As 1974, the Royal Mint to Thanon Pradipat ( Pradipat Street) was relocated, received the Thai Fine Arts Department the right to use. After a renovation, it was converted to the National Gallery, which was officially opened on August 8, 1977 on the occasion of Queen Sirikit's birthday of HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.
