National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research

The National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research ( NIWA ) is one of eight New Zealand Crown Research Institute, which has the task to research activities, surveys and publications, the New Zealand government, companies, institutions and the general public in terms of sustainable management and resource- handling to advise nature.

The institute focuses on claims to the Earth's atmosphere and climate, energy, fresh water, biodiversity and nature conservation, natural disasters, ocean and coastal, aquaculture and fisheries, and cares not least to the maintenance and development of Maori culture.

Like all government organizations has also NIWA a Maori name, Taihoro Nukurangi. Taihoro represents the flow and movement of the water. "Tai " refers to the coast and the tide and " horo " means fast movement. Nukurangi stands for the atmosphere as an interface between the sea and the sky.

The headquarters of the Institute is located in Auckland, where entrusted to 14 other offices as branches with specific tasks on both main islands of New Zealand distribute (from north to south: Bream Bay, Hamilton, Rotorua, Turangi, Napier, Wanganui, Wellington, Nelson, Greymouth, Christchurch, Tekapo, Lauder, Alexandra, Dunedin ).

History

In the 1980s the New Zealand government began the research and science to restructure. In 1989, for the Ministry of Research, Science and Technology created (Ministry of Research, Science and Technology) with the aim to advise the government to prepare decision-making processes to prioritize resources allocations and introduce the performance review. But that's not enough. They wanted to create individual institutions that independently and responsibly wirtschafteten under government supervision, working with our own policies and rules and performance-related public and private contracts completed for different tasks.

With the Crown Research Institutes Act 1992, ten Crown Research Institutes were established for this purpose, first, one of which still exist today, eight institutes. NIWA is one of them.

With the Companies Act 1993, all institutions were converted to limited liability companies ( Limited). NIWA is today, like all other Crown Research Institutes also, the Crown Company Unit ( controlling and advisory department ) Ministry of Finance and the Minister responsible for Research, Science and Technology assumed. Both the responsible Ministers are also interestingly always registered as a shareholder in each of the eight Crown Research Institutes.

The Institute operates five subsidiaries which are 100 % owned by the NIWA:

  • NIWA Vessel Management Ltd. , Founded on 9 August 1995 based in Wellington, which operates two research vessels.
  • NIWA Natural Solutions Ltd.. , Founded on July 21, 2003 and is based in Auckland, marketed as the marketing company the knowledge and research results of the NIWA about products.
  • NIWA Australia Pty Ltd. , Founded in 2001, headquartered in Brisbane, Australia, with the task of NIWA science to market products on the Australian market.
  • NIWA (USA) Inc., founded in 2000 with headquarters in Groton, USA, acts as a consulting company in the U.S. market.
  • NIWA Environmental Research Institute ( ERI), founded in 2000, headquartered in Ann Arbor, USA, focuses as a non-profit institute in the area of research funding in the United States.

NIWA Institute also has a 80 - to % stake

  • Unidata Pty Ltd. , A manufacturer of measurement and monitoring systems, and data logger ( data collection systems ) based in Perth, Australia.
