National Intelligence Agency (Democratic Republic of the Congo)

The Agence nationale de renseignements (ANR ) is the news service of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Agency's role is to ensure the internal and external security of the state.

ANR was set up as a news service of the Alliance of Democratic Forces pour la Libération du Congo ( AFDL ) in early 1997. In May 1997, the Agency has incorporated the premises of the former Service national d' intelligence et de protection ( SNIP ), which was renamed in 1996 in Direction générale de la sûreté national ( DGSN ). In October 2002, Georges Leta Mangasa, the head of the ANR was sentenced with others in the murder trial of Laurent- Désiré Kabila to death. Previously, in 2001, the acting President, Joseph Kabila, Kazadi Nyembwe had appointed chief of the ANR. The Agency was heavily criticized for its disregard of human rights by different organizations.
