National Labor Party

The National Labor Party was a historical political party in Australia that was active at the federal level of 14 November 1916 to 17 February 1917.

Prime Minister Billy Hughes founded the party for himself and his followers after he was expelled in November 1916 after months of debate on conscription during the First World War from the Australian Labor Party with other Members.

History

On September 15, 1916 was expelled from the Labor Party because of his advocacy of conscription in Australia Billy Hughes of the Political Labor League. On November 14 of that year he was finally banished from the party during a party meeting that he left furious with 24 other party members.

Henceforth, Hughes and colleagues seinte joined a minority government together as the National Labor Party. In February 1917, the merger of the National Labor Party led by Joseph Cook with the Commonwealth Liberal Party followed the Nationalist Party of Australia. Although the National Labor Party was supported by several trade unionists and the government formed, it was never officially registered in their short existence before merging into a party other than the party.
