National Library of Latvia

The National Library of Latvia ( Latvijas Nacionālā Biblioteka ) is the National Library of Latvia in the capital Riga.

It was in 1919, founded a year after the independence of Latvia. The collection includes over four million titles; the library has 450 employees. A new building of 1925 born in Riga U.S. architect Gunnar Birkerts on the left bank of the Daugava ( Western Dvina dt ) is under construction and scheduled to open in January 2014. Birkerts was in 1989 commissioned to design. The new library has 13 floors and a height of 68 meters. Costs shall be the equivalent of 193 million euros.

In an action under the European Capital of Culture year in Riga on 18 January 2014, the stocks of the current main building of the National Library by a human chain symbolically placed in the new building.

The National Library of Latvia is a member of the European Library.
