National Military Park

As National Battlefield (National battlefield ), National Battlefield Park, National Battlefield Site or National Military Park are in the United States of America designated areas, which are under federal legal protection because of their importance for the ( military) history of the USA and the National Park service can be managed.

In total there are now (2008) 11 National Battlefields National Military Park 9, 3 National Battlefield Park, and National Battlefield Site. The first such designated area was in 1890 asked by Congress under protection Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park. Originally, the sites were maintained by the War Department, however, this task was transferred to the National Park Service on August 10, 1933. In some of the areas there are cemeteries that are partly at the same time as National Cemeteries (United States National Cemetery ) under protection. Some of the set up at major American Battlegrounds memorials were on the other hand as a national monument under protection ( for example, the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument ), some battlefields protected as National Historic Sites (such as the Palo Alto Battlefield National Historic Site ).

The designated sites are automatically listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
