National Mosque of Malaysia

The Masjid Negara ( malay. Mosque of the state ) is the national mosque of Malaysia. It can hold 15,000 worshipers and is surrounded by 13 acres of gardens in Kuala Lumpur. The building was designed by a three-person team from the Malaysian Public Works Department, the British architect Howard Ashley, and Malaysians Hisham the Albakri and Baharuddin Kassim. The building was 1965 - built in reinforced concrete - as a symbol of the currently independent state Malaysia.

The main features are the 73 -meter-high minaret and the 18eckige star-shaped reinforced concrete roof. The umbrella, synonymous with the tropics, is clearly visible design feature: The main roof is a reference to an open umbrella, the minaret suggests a closed umbrella. The folded roof segments are a creative solution to achieve the required large span for the main hall. Reflective surfaces and water fountains surround the ensemble.
