National Museum, Gdańsk

The National Museum in Gdansk (Polish Muzeum w Narodowe Gdańsku ) is one of the seven most important museums of Poland.

History

For the third quarter of the nineteenth century, the city museum was established in the former Franciscan monastery. In 1884, the Museum of Decorative Arts is connected. After the Second World War the museum in " Muzeum Pomorskie " (the Pomeranian Museum ) has been renamed and moved to Oliva. From the collections of three other museums were founded: the Maritime Museum (Muzeum Morskie ), the Archaeological Museum (Muzeum Archeologiczne ) and the Historical Museum of the City of Danzig (Muzeum Historyczne Miasta of Gdansk ). In 1972, the Museum Muzeum w Narodowe Gdańsku ( National Museum of Gdansk ) has been renamed.

The collections in the main building

The museum displays arts and crafts from the historically important periods of the city and the surrounding East Pomerania. The Middle Ages are represented by ecclesiastical carvings and altars from the surrounding area. From the Netherlands comes the most famous painting in the museum, a arisen around 1470 major work of Hans Memling, the monumental triptych of the Last Judgement. Here is also the largest Polish collection of great works by Anton Möller, 1563-1611, known and entered into the history of art as a "painter of Danzig". The Flemish and Dutch painting especially of the 17th century reflects the cultural importance of trade relations with the city of the Netherlands. Dutch and Swedish faience of the Baroque period, Danziger ovens, remarkable ironwork and the pewter, the art of Danzig cabinetmaker and distinguished by their extraordinary decorative richness Danziger silver work are focal points of the craft departments, but not all areas on permanent display.
