National Museum of Brazil

The Brazilian National Museum (Portuguese Museu Nacional da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro ) is the oldest scientific institution in Brazil and the largest natural and ethnological museum of Latin America.

It was recognized in 1818 by the Portuguese King John VI. founded. It should serve to promote science and research in Brazil. Originally, the museum housed a botanical collection and preserved animals, especially birds, making the old building, which was still at the Campo de Santana in downtown Rio de Janeiro, as the " Bird House " (Casa dos Pássaros ) was known. The museum is now located in the former São Cristóvão Palace today in public city park Quinta da Boa Vista.
