The Olympic Stadium Tokyo (Japanese国立 霞ヶ丘 陸上 競技 場Kokuritsu Kasumigaoka Rikujō Kyōgijō, German " National Athletics Stadium Kasumigaoka " ) in Kasumigaoka, Shinjuku district, was the main venue for the Olympic Summer Games 1964. 's Olympic stadium currently has a capacity of 57 363 seats. In 2015, the stadium will be closed and then demolished.

History

The sports facility was opened in 1958 as the National Stadium. The first major event was the Asian Games in 1958. Another major sporting event after the Olympic Games were the World Athletics Championships in 1991.

From 1980 to 2000, the Olympic Stadium was the venue for the World Cup for football clubs. The stadium also held each year on 1 January, the final of the Emperor's Cup ( cup competition in the Japanese football), and on November 3 the final of the Yamazaki Nabisco Cup, the Japanese Super Cup instead. It was also a venue for the FIFA Club World Cup.

Owner of the stadium is the Nihon Sports Shinko Center (日本 スポーツ 振興 センター, German "Japanese sports promotion center "), a self -regulatory body of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.

Summer Olympic Games 2020

For the Summer Games 2020, the old Olympic Stadium will be demolished and replaced on the same site by a designed by Zaha Hadid building with 80,000 seats and schließbarem roof.
