National Pipe Thread

The National Pipe Thread (NPT thread, NPT pipe thread) according to ASME / ANSI B1.20.1 is an American thread standard for self-sealing pipe fittings.

The seal is achieved in that the threads are arranged conical. With screwing of conventional pipe thread, in addition, a sealing agent (for example teflon tape, hemp ) is placed between the threads. In contrast, the National Pipe thread needs - Dryseal form ( NPTF thread, NPTF pipe thread) according to ASME / ANSI B1.20.3 no sealant. Occasionally NPT as MPT (Male Pipe Thread ) or FPT ( Female Pipe Thread ) and also as a MIP (Male iron pipe) and FIP ( Female iron pipe) are referred to.

Compared to the Whitworth thread and British Standard Pipe (BSP ), the diameter coefficient (slope in threads per inch, threads per inch ) and cone angles are slightly different, so that both threads are not screwed together.
