National Police of Iceland

The Islands Police (Icelandic Lögreglan ) is the law enforcement agency for the territory of Iceland. The Icelandic Coast Guard is responsible at sea.

History

Prior to the creation of a national police in Iceland the police violence was local authorities at municipal level. 1976 was established by decision of the government at that time State Police ( Rannsóknarlögregla ríkisins ), which became operational on 1 July 1977. Víkingasveitin ( official name: Sérsveit ríkislögreglustjórans ) is the Icelandic police and security forces special forces unit. It is also used in other countries.

Structure

The Justizmimister is also the top employer of the Icelandic police. The National Police commission reports to both the Ministry of Justice as well as the Icelandic Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The police commission commanded the police forces of the 25 districts, the National Police Academy and the airport police from Keflavik Airport.

Networking

Logreglan is a member of the Europol network. Since Iceland has no army, but still is a member of NATO, for example, is the Víkingasveitin used abroad in NATO missions.
