National Preserve

National Preserves are areas in the United States that have been designated by Congress as nature reserves. They are mostly managed by the National Park Service. Exceptions are the Valles Caldera National Preserve under the administration of the United States Forest Service and the Preserve proportion of Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve the Bureau of Land Management.

The Preserves are similar in their protective status to National Parks in them, but in contrast to these mining, production of oil / gas and mostly hunting and trapping allowed.

Examples of National Preserves are:

  • The Bering Land Bridge National Preserve in Alaska, the remains of Beringia, an existing during the ice ages of the Pleistocene land bridge between North America and Asia, is under protection.
  • The Yukon - Charley Rivers National Preserve, a protected area on the Yukon with paleontological and archaeological sites.

Multiple extensions of protected areas have been designated with a higher protection status as Preserve to them in the existing uses to be able to (especially hunting) continue. Examples include Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve in Idaho or the Katmai National Park & Preserve in Alaska.
