National Railways of Zimbabwe

National Railways of Zimbabwe ( NRZ), until 1980 Rhodesian Railways ( RR) has a route network of 3394 km and thus one of the longest in Africa. 313 km from Gweru to Harare are electrified. The rails carry an axle load of 17.2 t, 18.6 t and some have cape gauge. The management centers and traffic hubs in the NRZ are Bulawayo and Harare, Gweru is a large railway depot. There is also the largest marshalling yard in the country.

Stretch

The routes of Beitbridge on the border with the Republic of South Africa Bulawayo to Victoria Falls on the Victoria Falls on the border with Zambia, another of Plumtree on the border with Botswana via Bulawayo, Somabhula, Gweru (formerly Gwelo ) and Kwekwe to Harare, then from Harare to Mutare further (formerly Umtali ) on the border with Mozambique and on to the port city of Beira. Another route via Malvernia on the border with Mozambique and on to the port city of Maputo branches at Somabhula. Random routes lead from Gweru to Masvingo ( formerly Fort Victoria), of Mbizi at the track Somabhula - Malvemia to Buffalo Range ( Nandi Mill ) and Harare one by Zave ( extension to Kafue / Zambia in SADC discussion) or Kildona Maryland and a more by Shamva.

The network of NRZ connects the of Spoornet, Zambia Railways, Botswana Railways and Caminhos de Ferro de Moçambique Central and South together. Indirectly, the southern network of Société Nationale des Chemins de fer du Congo, TAZARA, the rail network in Malawi and the Benguela railway can be reached about it.

Rolling stock

The NRZ has 30 electric locomotives, 275 diesel locomotives, five operational steam locomotives (14A 525 15A 395 15A 416 16A 611 16A and 613, all steam locomotives are located in Bulawayo ), about 400 cars and 13,000 freight cars.

History

In Bulawayo, there is the Railway Museum of NRZ.

On 1 February 2003 until 50 people died when a busy 1100 passengers in passenger Detention collided with an oncoming freight train head-on. The signal conditioning was broken and it was in breach of safety rules that had to be met in such a case.
