National Security Council (Japan)

The Japanese Security (Japanese安全 保障 会议, Anzen - Hosho kaigi ) is a committee of the Cabinet, which advises the Prime Minister on matters of defense policy and external security. Its members, chaired by the Prime Minister of the Foreign Minister, the Minister of Finance, the Minister of Defence, the Interior Minister, the Cabinet Secretary, the Minister of Economy, the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the chairman of the National Public Safety Commission. At the request of the Prime Minister take on other ministers, the chief of staff or other person responsible for the Self-Defense Forces in the meetings section.

The Security Council was established on 1 June 1986 as the successor of the National Defence Council (国防 会议, Kokubo - kaigi ). He lays down the guidelines of the Japanese defense policy, but also deals with questions of other policies, provided that they affect the national security of Japan, such as the industrial production and foreign policy initiatives.

The plan of Prime Minister Abe Shinzō to create a National Security Council on the American model, was abandoned by his successor, Yasuo Fukuda.
