National Security Council (Turkey)

The Millî Güvenlik Kurulu ( " National Security ") is a political-military body in Turkey. It has an advisory function. Similar bodies with changing names and powers had existed since 1933.

History

First time ( " High Defense " ) was formed a political-military committee in 1933 under the name Yüksek Müdafaa Meclisi. According to the available 14433 consisted of the Defence Council of State president, prime minister, chief of staff and cabinet members. In 1949, then followed by the Law No. 5399 of Millî Savunma Yüksek Kurulu ( " Higher Council of National Defense "). This Council determined the basic principles of security policy. He belonged to only selected ministers.

After the military coup of 1960, the new constitution designation and competences of the Council laid down new. The Council received the current name Millî Güvenlik Kurulu.

The National Security Council determined the main features of the Turkish security policy.

After a constitutional amendment in 2003, the influence of the Turkish Armed Forces has been pushed back. This body has since then in addition to even the Deputy Prime Minister and the Department of Justice and the Minister of Interior. The powers were curtailed.

Competencies

The Millî Güvenlik Kurulu has an advisory role under the Constitution. , Article 118

" The National Security Council shall inform the Council of Ministers its recommendation decisions regarding the provision, establishment and application of the national security policy of the State and to ensure the necessary coordination with his views.
