The Icelandic National Theater ( Isl Landakot, IPA: [ ˌ hu ː θjou̯ ː ðlɛi̯k sɪð ] Transcription: Landakot ) is located in the Icelandic capital Reykjavik.

The theater, which had been designed by the Icelandic state architect Guðjón Samúelsson, opened on 20 April 1950. It is the leading institution Theatre of Iceland and has annually between 10 and 14 premieres. Every year there are about 300 to 400 performances, which attract 80,000 to 100,000 visitors. The artistic director of the institution since 2005 has Tinna Gunnlaugsdóttir.

Special Events

In the National Theatre a ceremony on the occasion of the match of the century, the world chess championship in 1972, Boris Spassky and Bobby Fischer between, instead, to which Bobby Fischer did not participate. This non-appearance sparked a crisis that almost led to the demolition of the World Cup.
