National University of East Timor

The Universidade Nasional Timor Lorosa'e ( UNTL, National University of Timor- Leste; Portuguese: Universidade Nacional de Timor- Leste ), Dili is the capital of higher education in East Timor. It was founded on 15 November 2000.

History

In the Portuguese colonial era only a few Timorese have a higher education, mostly in Portugal, completed. Only in 1986 was founded during the Indonesian occupation by the Governor Mário Carrascalão the Universitas Timor Timur ( UnTim ) was the first university of East Timor. The private institution was the training of mid-level officials, agricultural technicians and teachers, the top schools. There were no courses for architecture, law and medicine. International contacts were rigorously monitored. 1998/99 we exceeded the 4000 limit to the number of students. 73 professors taught. In April 1999, the University was closed by the Indonesian authorities, as a result of demonstrations in support of East Timor's independence from Indonesia.

In September 1999, destroyed Indonesian soldiers and pro- Indonesian militias before the UN took over control of the country, its infrastructure. 95 percent of schools were destroyed. This included the entire university and its facilities.

Despite the low budget of UNTAET was using the professors and students of the old University and the Polytechnic School in November 2000 UNTL the teaching started with 5,000 students in the buildings of the school, Dr. António de Carvalho, the School of Technology Dr. Silva Cunha, school Canto Resende and later to record in the Polytechnic School in Hera and the ancient buildings of UnTim. The university today

Currently there are five faculties. Agriculture, political science, business, teaching and engineering. In July 2001, the National Center were for Scientific Research ( Centro Nacional de Investigação Científica ) and the National Institute for Linguistics ( Instituto Nacional de Linguistica ) was founded. Tetum, one of the two official languages ​​should be promoted through initiatives. Currently, with the help of Portuguese lawyers, the establishment of a law school prepared.
