The National University of Lesotho, NUL short, is the only university of the Kingdom of Lesotho. Most of its faculties are located in Roma, about 35 kilometers southeast of the capital, Maseru.

History

Roma was founded in 1860 as a Catholic mission. Since then, the city next to the capital Maseru was developed into a center of Catholicism in the then Basutoland.

1945 was founded in Roma Catholic Pius XII College. The academic degrees granted by the University of South Africa ( UNISA ). 1964 from the College, the State University of Basutoland, Bechuanaland Protectorate and Swaziland. The eponymous countries were at the time just before the independence. Consequently, the University in 1966 in University of Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland ( UBLS ) has been renamed. 1967 issued by the university itself for the first time the financial statements.

Once in the following years in Botswana and Swaziland branches of UBLS had been established, it came in 1975 to the dissolution of the bond. The University of Botswana (UB ) and the University of Swaziland ( UNISWA ) were self-employed. The University of Roma leads since then the name of National University of Lesotho.

By the end of the apartheid era featured South African students about one-third of the approximately 1,500 students. Many of them were the African National Congress ( ANC) close. Since 1991, the proportion of foreign students has decreased. Nevertheless, the number of participants to the NUL enrollments rose to about 7000 ( 2006). The increase is partly due to the conversion of the Lesotho Agricultural College, Maseru in a university faculty.

The lecturers came from numerous countries around the world. In the 1980s, all the continents were represented. It was, however, target the country and responsible development organizations, more and more locals to help job in academia. This has been achieved to a certain degree. Structure of the University

The National University of Lesotho is centered on an area in the small town of Roma. Here are the most faculties, the student halls of residence and the homes of faculty members. Together with administrative offices, library, kindergarten, schools, a refectory, chapels, restaurants and sporting facilities they form the campus, which is surrounded by a fence and is thus largely sealed off from the surrounding villages.

There are several faculties ( Faculties ), which in turn are divided into departments ( departments). Each faculty is headed by a Dean ( Dean ). The supreme body is the Senate ( Senate ) and the Council ( Council). The Senate determines the academic policies, while the Council is acting like a board. For example, he is responsible for the selection of managerial staff. The Vice-Chancellor ( Vice-Chancellor ) is the real head of the university. From 1 January 2007, the Nigerian Adelani Ogunrinade held this office. 2011 joined the Professor Sharon Sivert as the first Vice Chancellor of NUL history at this office. The Chancellor ( Chancellor ), in which it is the respective King of Lesotho, however, is formally the representative head of the university. Currently, the office is perceived by Letsie III.
