Natterer's bat

Natterer's bat (Myotis nattereri )

The Natterer's bat (Myotis nattereri ) belongs to the suborder of bats ( Microchiroptera ) and here is the family of Myotis bats ( Vespertilionidae ) assigned. The scientific species name honors the Austrian zoologist Johann Natterer ( 1787-1843 ).

Features

The name of this kind goes back to solid, acting as fringe hairs on the tail wing membrane. It has a brownish gray back coat color. Their fur is long haired and easy. In contrast, her undercoat is light gray to white.

She is from Hull to head around the 40 to 50 mm long, has a wingspan of 245-280 millimeters and weighs 5 to 10 grams.

The ears of the Natterer's bat are relatively small. These usually do not reach 20 millimeters. As with other species of the genus mouse ears (Myotis ) the ears are longer than wide, membranous thin and with an elongated ear cover - provided - Tragus.

Nutrition

They feed on small insects, such as flies, mosquitoes and moths but also caterpillars and spiders belong to their prey. Their hunting grounds among the forest, primarily ground-level forest layers.

Resting Places

In the summer it moves to quarters in holes or cavities of facades. There, however, it remains generally not last long because it changes their location usually every 1-4 days.

As winter quarters they preferred underground cavities such as the Segeberger limestone cave, bunker or old vaulted cellar. There are also observed regularly Natterer's bats, which have frostbite on the tips of the ears. Therefore, it is quite possible that some of the Natterer's bats hibernates in aboveground locations that are not frost proof, such as holes in trees.

Threat

The Natterer's bat is a nature reserve. One of the main problems for the native bats is the lack of suitable day and winter sleeping quarters as well as quarters for nurseries, where the young animals are born and cared for by the mother until they are self-employed. Through extensive façade renovation, the number of quarters for the Natterer's bat has declined rapidly.
