Natural (music)

The resolution characters ♮ is an applied in the notation characters. It makes changes to the pitch ( increase or decrease ), the (even accidents ) are required by pre-or accidentals, in time to reverse. The character is written either on a line or space of the staff, and refers to the standing on this pitch tone. If the designated tone on an auxiliary line, the resolution sign is placed in front of the guide.

For example, a cis '', which was achieved by a cross in front of the note with the pitch c'', again set back by a sign in front of the next note in the same position in a c '':

A '' humbled by a ♭ for the note, however, is on the resolution back to d '':

The resolution also emphasizes character double accidentals (double crosses and double -b) to complete.

Here, for example, a gisis ' ( hash mark prior g ') is resolved to g':

And here ases ' (Double -B before a ') for a':

Since a Versetzungszeichen always expects from each of Stammton, stands in front of a Versetzungszeichen always implicitly a resolution character, without having to be listed. For example, the note G sharp is lowered by a subsequent ♭ for ges without it before a resolution needs to g. In older printed music can be found in such a context occasionally cross-listed natural sign, but this spelling is now considered outdated.

Besides the use as accidentals, in which the natural sign is right in front of a note and remains valid until the end of the clock, the resolution characters can also be used to change key signature of a song. In this case, a natural sign is written for each sign, and then after a double bar line, the sign of the new key.

The resolution character also occurs in the numbering with the General Bass. There it indicates that the alteration of the third to play the chord you want to ignore.

History

In the older chant notation formed from the 10th century, initially only two accidentals out that always referred to the Stammton B: the b rotundum ( "round B") or b molle ( " soft B") described the lower Tonvariante, the b quadratum ( " square B") or b durum ( "hard B") higher. From the b quadratum both the cross and the resolution characters developed. The designation b quadratum the foreign-language names bequadro (Italian ) or bécarre (French ) are derived from the natural sign.
