Naturama

Naturama was introduced in 1956 anamorphic movie recording procedures for 35mm wide screen movies.

Background

After the introduction of CinemaScope most major movie studios took over this wide screen format for 35mm film. However, it had to be paid royalties to 20th Century Fox. In order to avoid these costs, Republic Pictures wanted to use its own process and decided on the developed by Ernst Abbe in France Cinépanoramic recourse.

They bought the rights for the distribution of Cinépanoramic and fit the anamorphic lens system to the U.S. market to. The picture was taken first compressed in a 2:1 ratio and then listed equalized in the cinema hall on the 2.35:1 film width. The time and anamorphic had an additional lens that allowed virtually distortion-free close-ups.

Republic Pictures called the system Naturama and wanted it to other film studios rent. Despite the improved image quality compared to CinemaScope, there was no interest in the new process. With the end of Republic Pictures also Naturama in the U.S. ends.
