Nauru Phosphate Corporation

The Republic of Nauru Phosphate ( RONPhos ), formerly Nauru Phosphate Corporation (NPC, Nauru Phosphate Company ') is a public company, which controls the degradation of the phosphate in Nauru. The economy of Nauru is entirely dependent on phosphate mining, resulting in the degradation of the environment. The chairman of the NPC is currently Riddell Akua, who also sits on the Nauruan Parliament. One of the former chairman, René Harris, President of Nauru four times.

Started in 1906, founded by the British ship officer Albert Ellis Pacific Phosphate Company with the help of the German government to phosphate mining. After the First World War Nauru to Britain, Australia and New Zealand was passed. These established the British Phosphate Commissioner, which took over the rights to the phosphate.

1967 bought the Nauruans on the mineral rights from the British Phosphate Commissioner. On 1 July 1970, the company was founded and later nationalized by Nauru, which gained independence shortly before. The government gives the most profit from the degradation of the Nauruan population. Bad investments and corrupt dealings could Nauru little money left. The state tried at the UN Court, for the years of exploitation of the phosphate fields to force Australia to compensation payments, which succeeded partially.

The export was largely discontinued in 2000, although still slightly phosphate is mined. Since the end of 2004 is re- exported increased. Recently, around 800 jobs, half of all workers, deleted, which meant an increase in unemployment of about 10 percent.
