Naval Act of 1938

The Naval Expansion Act (also: Second Vinson Act ) was a law passed on May 17, 1938 U.S. law that an increase in the U.S. fleet by 20 % allowed.

The law

The law allowed for the increase of the Navy spending by 1.09 billion U.S. dollars to develop a "two - ocean fleet " in the next ten years.

It fell to the Members of the House of Representatives Carl Vinson. It was preceded by the " Naval Parity Act " ( " Vinson - Trammell Act," the "First Vinson Act") of 1934 and the " Naval Act" of 1936. Successor was the "Two -Ocean Navy Act" of 1940.

It was a response to the Japanese invasion of China and the German invasion of Austria dar.

The allowed by the Washington Naval Treaty of 1922 and the London Conference of 1930 limits on the tonnage of the U.S. fleet were increased by the law in the following respects:

  • Capital ships: to 135,000 tonnes to 660,000 tonnes
  • Aircraft carrier: by 40,000 tonnes to 175,000 tonnes
  • Kreuzer: to 86,750 tonnes to 412 524 tonnes
  • Destroyer: by 38,000 tonnes to 228,000 tonnes
  • U- boats: by 13,658 tonnes to 81,956 tonnes
