The Naval Air Station Oceana (also Apollo Soucek Field ) is an airbase of the United States Navy in Virginia Beach ( Virginia). Commanding Officer CAPT James D. Webb. Executive Officer is CAPT Robert N. Geis and Command Master Chief CMDCM (AW / SW) Robert Santiago. The area of all facilities is 27.6 km ². The airport was an alternate landing place ( alternative landing site) for the Space Shuttle NASA.
Units
On the NAS Oceana have 17 squadrons ( strike fighter squadrons ) with the F/A-18 Hornet and F/A-18 Super Hornet equipped, regularly stationed on aircraft carriers Carrier Air Wings 1, 3, 7, 8 and 17, their home base.
The following tenant commands are located on the base:
- Fleet Readiness Center Mid-Atlantic
- Strike Fighter Wing Atlantic
- Strike Fighter Weapons School, Atlantic ( SFWSL )
- Landing Signal Officer School ( LSO School)
- CVW commands Carrier Air Wing 1, 3, 7, 8 and 17 ( HQs )
- Strike Fighter Squadron Composite 12 (VFC -12) the Navy Reserve F/A-18C Hornet with a relay
- Fleet Logistics Support Squadron 56 (VR -56) the Navy Reserve with McDonnell Douglas C -9 Skytrain II squadron
- Fleet Area Control and Surveillance Facility Virginia Capes ( FACSFAC VACAPES )
- Construction Battalion Unit 415 (CBU 415) " Seabees "
- Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training Unit Oceana ( Oceana CNATTU )
- Marine Aviation Training Support Group 33 of the United States Marine Corps Training Administration Command
- Medical facilities at the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, VA.
