Naval Aircraft Factory N3N

The Naval Aircraft Factory N3N is a two-seat biplane, which was used primarily as a training aircraft for the U.S. Navy. It was built to N3N at the Naval Aircraft Factory in Philadelphia. It was built both as a country and as a seaplane. The seaplane version had a large central float and two small floats on the wingtips. The country aircraft had a fixed undercarriage. The airframe was a fabric used to cover metal construction.

History

The N3N were powered by a Wright R- 760-2 Whirlwind radial engine with 235 hp. Many of these engines were also built at the Naval Aircraft Factory.

The first flight took place in August 1935. Deliveries to the U.S. Navy began in June 1936. Altogether 816 copies at the Naval Aircraft Factory was built. During World War II she served on to pilot training. At this time, the aircraft of the novice pilot training in the U.S. Navy were completely painted yellow. Therefore, the N3N got the name " Canary" ( canary ), unofficially it was also called "Yellow Peril " ( Yellow Peril ).

In 1941, four aircraft have been delivered to the U.S. Coast Guard. The last machine was taken in 1961 the service of the U.S. Naval Academy.
