NaviServer

NaviServer is an open -source Web server, a fork of the AOLserver, which is used by AOL.

NaviServer is like AOLserver multithreaded, which can process programmed with the script language Tcl dynamic web pages and is primarily used for high traffic websites.

NaviServer / AOLserver was originally developed by the company Navisoft, but renamed in 1995 when AOL bought up Navisoft. Since mid-2005 this AOLserver Fork will be further developed under the original name NaviServer. In this split-off version of the decision-making process should be conducted openly about new features. The Fork is based on the line of development of the AOLserver 4.x

NaviServer is licensed under the Mozilla Public License, which allows commercial use.

Properties

Some new properties that has NaviServer against the AOLserver, include

  • A watchdog for an automatic restart in case of failure
  • Start with a command-line mode
  • The output of all configuration parameters at server startup
  • Virtual mass Hosting
  • Improved sendmail version with support for character encoding
  • Possibility of using the Tcl virtual filesystem
  • HTTP range requests for streaming and resuming of downloads
  • So-called Spooler and writer threads

The feature of the configurable spooler and writer threads allows efficient downloads and uploads in separate threads. In order to transfer files from a configurable size, eg several hundred megabytes, so swapped that the default thread pool to normal page requests are available as soon as possible.
