Nazianzus

Nazianzus ( Nazianzos, Greek Ναζιανζός ) was a town in Cappadocia and is 4 km northwest of the present Turkish village Bekârlar (formerly Nenezi ).

Originally called Nadandos place met for the first time in late Roman itineraries; it is occupied as a bishopric since 325. 382/83 is Gregory of Nazianzus than after succeeding his eponymous father Gregory of Nazianzus the Elder Bishop here. In the 11th century it is collected at the Metropolitan seat, in the 14th century he is called up as orphaned.

The village location is characterized by two mounds with only small remains of walls and an intervening valley from where there is a Seljuk Türbe today. From the Elder built by Gregory of Nazianzus famous octagonal church nothing remains.
