History

The NCR has been around for more than 120 years and can be considered as the oldest IT companies in the world.

After James Ritty had in 1879 invented the cash register, and with John Birch received a patent on January 30, 1883 concluded the company founded and run by the former in the hands of Jacob H. Eckert of Cincinnati, which they renamed the National Manufacturing Company, in 1884 but sold it to John Henry Patterson. Patterson led them now as National Cash Register Company ( NCR) on, which now fabricated the first mechanical cash registers in a large scale. The business flourished and the NCR soon expanded to Europe. In 1896, the National Cash registers GmbH ( NRC ) was established in Germany.

Patterson established his company in modern sales methods that were unusual for that time. All sellers had to always look for a well-groomed appearance eighth, participate in regular training and Pattersons sale maxims - in the form of a small printed booklet, known internally as " the Bible " - internalize. Also, Patterson already massively used the principle of advertising in the form of brochures, which he sent to dealers all over the States, and incidentally invented the flipchart.

John H. Patterson was also known for his rigorous "hire and fire" practice. Among the employees because of disputes dismissed by him is one of Thomas J. Watson, who then moved to CTR, which he, however, soon renamed IBM. Both Watson and Patterson were each sentenced to one year in prison for unfair business practices. However, they disagreed with the verdict and could buy with a deposit.

The product range of NCR has been continually developed and expanded. 1906 Charles F. Kettering developed the first electric cash register, which was driven by a motor; followed later by electronic cash registers. In 1911, the NCR had already sold over a million cash registers and employed 6,000 employees, the market share in the U.S. was 95 percent.

In 1953, the company entered into the electronic data processing and was there one of the pioneers.
